Valence bond theory successfully explains the magnetic behaviour of complexes. The substances which contains unpaired electrons are paramagnetic and its character increases as the number of unpaired electrons increases. Magnetic moment of a complex can be determined experimentally and by using formula \(\sqrt{\mathrm{n}(\mathrm{n}+2)}\) and we can determine the number of unpaired electrons in it. This information is important in writing the electronic structure of complex which in turn also useful in deciding the geometry of complex
Aqueous solution of Ni2+ contains [Ni(H2O)6]2+ and its magnetic moment is 2.83 B.M. when ammonia is added in it, the predicted change in the magnetic moment of solution is:
- It will remain same
- It increases from 2.83 B.M.
- It decreases from 2.83 B.M.
- It cannot be predicted theoretically
Answer
