In a 1.0 L aqueous solution when the reaction
\(2 \mathrm{Ag}_{(\mathrm{aq})}^{+}+\mathrm{Cu}_{(\mathrm{s})} \rightleftharpoons \mathrm{Cu}_{(\mathrm{aq})}^{2+}+2 \mathrm{Ag}_{(\mathrm{s})}\)
reaches equilibrium, [Cu2+] = x M and [Ag+] = y M.
If the volume of solution is doubled by adding water, then at equilibrium :
\(2 \mathrm{Ag}_{(\mathrm{aq})}^{+}+\mathrm{Cu}_{(\mathrm{s})} \rightleftharpoons \mathrm{Cu}_{(\mathrm{aq})}^{2+}+2 \mathrm{Ag}_{(\mathrm{s})}\)
reaches equilibrium, [Cu2+] = x M and [Ag+] = y M.
If the volume of solution is doubled by adding water, then at equilibrium :
- \(\left[\mathrm{Cu}^{2+}\right]=\frac{\mathrm{x}}{2} \mathrm{M},\left[\mathrm{Ag}^{+}\right]=\frac{\mathrm{y}}{2} \mathrm{M}\)
- \(\left[\mathrm{Cu}^{2+}\right]>\frac{\mathrm{x}}{2} \mathrm{M},\left[\mathrm{Ag}^{+}\right]>\frac{\mathrm{y}}{2} \mathrm{M}\)
- \(\left[\mathrm{Cu}^{2+}\right]<\frac{\mathrm{x}}{2} \mathrm{M},\left[\mathrm{Ag}^{+}\right]>\frac{\mathrm{y}}{2} \mathrm{M}\)
- \(\left[\mathrm{Cu}^{2+}\right]<\frac{\mathrm{x}}{2} \mathrm{M},\left[\mathrm{Ag}^{+}\right]<\frac{\mathrm{y}}{2} \mathrm{M}\)
Answer
(C) [ Cu ^ 2+ ] y 2 M
