Given below are two statements: one is labelled as Assertion (A) and the other is labelled as Reason (R).
Assertion (A): Bonding molecular orbital has greater stability than corresponding antibonding molecular orbital.
Reason (R): The electron density in bonding molecular orbital is located away from the space between the nuclei while in antibondng molecular orbital it is located between the nuclei of the bonded atoms.
In the light of the above statements, choose the most appropriate answer from the options given below:
- (A) is correct but (R) is not correct
- (A) is not correct but (R) is correct
- Both (A) and (R) are correct and (R) is the correct explanation of (A)
- Both (A) and (R) are correct but (R) is not the correct explanation of (R)
Answer
(A) (A) is correct but (R) is not correct
