Electromagnetic wave theory was proposed by James Clark Maxwell in 1864 . Acc. to this theory, the energy is emitted from any energy source continuously in the form of radiations & is called radiant energy.
Some important characteristics of a wave are :
1 . Wavelength (λ) :- Distance between any two consecutive crests or troughs
2 . Frequency (ν) :- Number of waves passing through a point in one second.
3 . Amplitude :- Height of crest or depth of trough
4 . Wave Number\((\bar{v})=\frac{1}{\lambda}\)
Relation between velocity, wavelength & frequency
c = ν × λ
Which of the following is incorrect w.r.t Maxwell wave theory?
- EM radiations travel with the speed of light.
- The wave number of radiations having frequency of 4 × 1014 Hz is 1.33 × 104 cm–1
- Electric field of radiations is perpendicular to magnetic field but parallel to direction of propagation.
- Radiant energy is a continuous form of energy.
Answer
(C) Electric field of radiations is perpendicular to magnetic field but parallel to direction of propagation.
