What they do

A psychiatrist is a medical doctor who specialises in diagnosing and treating mental, emotional and behavioural disorders — from depression, anxiety and schizophrenia to substance use disorders, OCD and eating disorders. Unlike psychologists, psychiatrists can prescribe medication and often combine pharmacotherapy with psychotherapeutic interventions. They work in hospitals, outpatient clinics, de-addiction centres and forensic settings.
