What they do
Nautical officers (also called deck officers or navigating officers) are responsible for the safe navigation of a vessel at sea — plotting courses, maintaining a continuous bridge watch, managing cargo stowage plans and ensuring the ship complies with COLREGS and SOLAS. They progress from Third Officer through Second Officer and Chief Officer to the rank of Master (Captain), taking increasing command and regulatory responsibility at each step.
