What they do

Mining engineers plan and manage the extraction of mineral resources — coal, iron ore, gold, limestone and other commodities — from the earth. They design safe, efficient mine layouts, oversee drilling and blasting operations, manage ground stability and ventilation, and ensure compliance with environmental and safety regulations. They work in open-cast and underground mines, quarries and mineral processing facilities.
