What they do

Microbiologists study bacteria, viruses, fungi, protozoa and other microscopic organisms — their biology, ecology, genetics and interactions with hosts and the environment. They work in clinical diagnostics, pharmaceutical manufacturing, food safety, environmental monitoring and fundamental research. Their expertise underpins vaccine development, antibiotic discovery and infection control.
