What they do

Merchant Navy officers command and operate commercial vessels — container ships, bulk carriers, tankers, passenger cruises and offshore vessels — transporting goods and people across international waters. They manage navigation, cargo operations, ship safety, crew welfare and compliance with international maritime law (SOLAS, MARPOL). The career is broadly split between deck officers (navigation and cargo) and marine engineers (propulsion and machinery).
