What they do

Mathematicians develop, study and apply mathematical theory, models and algorithms. Pure mathematicians advance the discipline itself — number theory, topology, algebra, analysis — while applied mathematicians build models for physics, finance, engineering and data science. In India the field is particularly vibrant in combinatorics, number theory and probability, with leading research at TIFR, IMSc, ISI and IITs.

Education path

PCM → B.Sc/Integrated M.Sc Maths, then PhD.
