What they do

Marine engineers design, operate and maintain the propulsion systems, machinery, electrical systems and onboard equipment of ships, submarines, offshore rigs and other marine vessels. Seagoing marine engineers manage engine rooms on commercial ships, while shore-based roles involve ship design, classification, naval consulting and port equipment maintenance. The profession is heavily regulated by international maritime law.
