Linguist — Language

Studies how language works.

What they do

Linguists study the structure, function, history, acquisition and social use of human language — phonetics, phonology, morphology, syntax, semantics and sociolinguistics. Academic linguists generate original research on language phenomena; applied linguists work in language teaching, natural language processing (NLP), speech technology, forensic linguistics, policy and endangered-language documentation. India, with 19,500+ dialects and 122 major languages, is one of the richest linguistic environments in the world.
