Updates & License (Site Admin)

Self-hosted only — install new Edukali releases in place (with an automatic backup), see your licence status, and activate or re-activate this server.

What this page does

The Updates & License page is where you keep your own Edukali server up to date. It shows the version this instance is running, the state of your licence, and every release your licence entitles you to install. Starting an update is one click — Edukali backs up your database and uploaded files first, applies the release, and restarts the application.

This page — and the Content page next to it — appear only on self-hosted installs. On Edukali cloud they are hidden or report “Not a self-hosted instance”, because Edukali updates the hosted service for you. The reverse is true of the Licensing console, which appears only on Edukali cloud.

The This instance panel at the top holds three facts worth quoting to support: the Version you are running, the Build (a short code identifying the exact build), and the date your licence is valid until.

Your licence

The Licence panel shows a status badge — ACTIVE when everything is well, an amber grace state when Edukali could not be reached recently or your support window has just lapsed, and a red state when the key has been revoked. Alongside it you see how many products the licence covers, how many schools it allows, the date it is valid until, and when it was last verified with Edukali.

Click Updates & License in the left menu, under Server.

Click Check now in the top-right of the Licence panel. Edukali contacts the licence server immediately.

A confirmation appears. Use this straight after a renewal or after buying extra schools — it picks up the change without waiting for the next automatic check.

Renewals and buying additional schools happen on edukali.ai — follow the Renewals & additional schools link at the bottom of the panel. Sign in there with the account that purchased the licence, which is often not the same person who administers the server.

Activating (or re-activating) this server

A brand-new server is not activated until you enter its licence key. Until then, releases and your support window stay locked. The activation card sits below the Licence panel and is highlighted whenever this instance has no working activation.

Find your licence key — it is in your purchase email, and on edukali.ai/my-licenses. It looks like EDK-XXXX-XXXX-XXXX-XXXX.

Paste it into the key box on the Activate this instance card.

Click Activate. On success your releases and support window unlock straight away.

The card stays available even when the licence is already ACTIVE, then reading Re-activate or replace the licence key. Re-enter a key only if you reset this server’s seat from My Licences on edukali.ai, or if you are moving this server onto a different licence.

Installing a release

The Releases list shows every version available to this instance. Each row carries a badge: Running for the version you are on, Available for one you can install, or Locked when your support window does not cover it. Security releases are additionally flagged Security, and most rows link to their Release notes.

Find the release you want and click Update on its row.

Read the confirmation — Edukali backs up your database and uploads, applies migrations, then restarts the application — and click Back up and update.

Update progress panel listing the preflight, download, backup, migrate, restart and health-check steps with live status

The update runs step by step and reports progress live.

Watch the progress panel work through its steps: preflight checks, downloading images, backing up, applying migrations, restarting services, health check, then cleaning up.

Expect the app to be unavailable for up to a minute while it restarts. The page says so, reconnects on its own, and tells you when the new version is live.

A Locked release means the version was published after your support window ended. Use Renew support on the row to renew — the release unlocks once the renewal reaches this instance (press Check now to fetch it immediately).

If an update fails

If the new version fails its health check, Edukali rolls back on its own. When an update ends in a failed state, the progress panel offers Roll back to previous version — the previous images are still on the server, so the rollback needs no network access, and database changes are designed to stay compatible with the older version.

Your data is not at risk in either direction: a backup of the database and uploads is taken before any change is applied. If a rollback does not get you running again, quote the instance id shown in the Licence panel to Edukali support.

If the page says the update service is not configured on this install, one-click updates are simply not wired up on this server — updates then have to be run by hand on the host. Ask whoever set the server up to add the updater service to the stack.

Controls

Contacts the Edukali licence server immediately — picks up a renewal, added schools or a key change without waiting for the next automatic check.

Registers this server against the licence key you paste in, unlocking releases and your support window.

Shown on installable releases. Backs up, applies the release and restarts — expect under a minute of downtime.

Shown on locked releases. Opens edukali.ai to renew the support window that would let you install them.

Roll back to previous version

Appears after a failed update. Restores the previous version from images already on this server.
