Resource — File
Share a downloadable file (PDF, slide deck, sheet) via a link students open.
What it is
A File resource points to a downloadable document — a PDF, slide deck, spreadsheet or any other file. It works just like a Link (URL) but is labelled and iconed as a file so students know to expect a download.
How to add it
In Course content, click Add activity in a topic.
Title it, then either click Upload a file to store the document on the platform, or paste a file link (configMode: url) — e.g. a link to the document in your storage or drive.
The File type can upload your document to the platform (the Upload a file button) or store a link to one hosted elsewhere. If you paste a link, host the document somewhere students can reach.
What students see
How students open a file depends on whether you allow downloads. With downloads on, clicking the file opens or downloads it in a new tab (openMode: external), the same as a URL. With downloads off (the default for uploaded documents), a protected file opens in a view-only reader instead — see below.
Content protection
Uploaded documents are view-only by default — students can read them in the browser but can’t take a copy unless you allow it. Each file activity has an Allow download toggle in its settings; leave it off to protect the file, turn it on to let students save it.
A protected PDF opens in a view-only reader that renders the pages on-screen and blocks the browser’s Save-As and Print. The file is also served only to students with access to the course — the raw upload link won’t open on its own. Turning Allow download on removes the reader and serves the file normally.
View-only is a strong deterrent, not unbreakable copy protection — a determined user can still screenshot. For copyrighted material you want locked down further, protected streaming is on the roadmap.
Completion
Not graded. Completion tracking is a per-activity setting — the default here is manual (the student marks it done), and you can also turn tracking off in the activity settings. Whichever you pick feeds the course progress bar.
